"We just picked dad up from his week at AgeSong Bayside Park and we were happily surprised at his condition. In the 3 years he has lived with us, we've sampled many of the assisted living facilities in the East Bay, and have never found him so well-rested and cared-for after a respite stay.

My father's brain damage and related disabilities from Hydrocephalus has caused us a great deal of stress, and occasional respites are essential to our well-being as caregivers. Yet respite care can have surprising drawbacks. My dad often seems to have lost cognitive ground after a week out of his normal routines. But he was thinking with such clarity after a week at AgeSong that it was obvious his experience had been mentally stimulating, creative, and interesting. We are also accustomed to our instructions for his incontinence care (developed over a decade of caring for him) being ignored; at AgeSong, they were followed to the letter. We've even picked him up after a week at a reputable assisted living facility, and found him so neglected that I felt I wouldn't have subjected my dog to such uncaring "care".

When we picked him up from AgeSong, he was calm, clean, and happy. And there is an indefinable quality to a person who has been "noticed", rather than overlooked in a crowd, that manifests itself in older people as a glow of contentment. We could tell my dad had been more than just physically cared for; he had been "seen," and recognized for the person he is.

In all the years my dad's been with us we had come to believe that all assisted living facilities were about the same, with differing decor. We have now learned that there are places with higher levels of care. Yours was excellent.
